Norté

Norté is a bold Latin American restaurant and bar on the Gold Coast by Brisbane architecture and interiors studio, J.AR OFFICE, that celebrates the vibrant flavours and design traditions of Mexico and Peru. Defying the typical Australian coastal aesthetic, it delivers a richly layered and distinctive dining experience. The venue is spicy (three chillies), sassy yet low-key.

Norté is a venue that not only champions the flavours of its menu but keeps the experience authentic for those who can handle the heat. The design is influenced by the modernist, functionalist era of Mexico City, both materially and operationally, while avoiding interiors that feel themed. In the 1960s, the city marked a move towards modern architectural styles, emphasising functionality and efficiency in response to rapid growth and the need for more housing and infrastructure. This resonates with Norté’s local context (Queensland’s Gold Coast), which is currently experiencing exponential growth.

A legacy of the Gold Coast’s modernist resort past is referenced through texture and outdoor materials. This project is an example of highly considered interior design, demonstrating that you can design and build thoughtfully even under tight time constraints.
